With these difficult times and struggling economy, it is very hard for some of the top newspapers to stay in business. Most of them are funded by the ad's that are placed in them daily or weekly. I still like reading the Baltimore Sun and on occasion pick up some of the other papers such as the New York Times, Washington Post but only when I am bored!
However, I do like to have the papers around for my Maryland Steamed Crabs as well.
So for my choice of newspapers, I chose the Dundalk Eagle as being the survivor! I do believe they will stay in business longer then the bigger papers because:
- They are only 50cents
- By The People...allows you to write letters so the readers can interact with one another.
- The Community Calendar that keeps us up to date on current events.
- The Obituaries
- Talk of the Town
- Police Beat for the crimes in the area
- Classified, Help Wanted, Products for sale, etc...
- And one of my "Favorites" Take the Newspaper out of town with you and get a picture and they will post it in their paper for free. So its kind of like your few minutes of fame!
The Dundalk Eagle began in 1969 and has my VOTE on staying in business for another 30 years!
Just remember you can order your subscription at a very low cost and have it delivered right to your home, or just grab it late Wednesday evenings or first thing Thursday for your UP-TO-DATE. So now that I gave them "Free Advertisement" maybe they will write a letter for us in the By the People section for our project on World Aids Day ;) Sounds good huh??
Susan, you have a very solid case for the Dundalk Eagle. The only reason I didn't go in this direction is the same as why it would make sense to. They are small. They cannot handle costs and setbacks like the bigger newspapers will. Once they create apps and an online site (if they haven't already) than they will fizzle out faster than the bigger papers. I think it will be cool when they go digital because of their connected-ness to the community. With the things they uniquely offer as a newspaper, being even more connected will benefit them, not hurt them. For example, the police beat will be up-to-date through digital media and people won't only know what crimes have been happening in their area, they will know about them as they happen.
ReplyDeleteIts so hard to tell anymore with all the technology that is out there. My thought is that a lot of older people are the readers at this time, but until they are all gone I think it will stay strong. Now I feel ancient haha
DeleteI agree with Joshua. Since they are a smaller company they may not have enough money to stay around like the big newspaper because if the invention of different apps that are being used as newspapers. I enjoyed reading your blog. It made me want to go see about the Dundalk paper.
ReplyDeleteSometimes less is more...with them being smaller they have less overhead as well. I guess only time will tell. I do get the Dundalk Patch in my email box, not sure if they are associated.
DeleteThe Patch is owned by AOL.
DeleteI never seen this Rick...thanks for telling me that you posted ;)
DeleteYou and I had the same idea Susan, I think the Dundalk Eagle will survive because of how local it is and I didn't know the price of it, I couldn't find but that's a good price for a week.
ReplyDeleteA lot of us agree, maybe its because we all live here. I grew up in Baltimore Highlands and went to Lansdowne Sr. High and when I was living over there I always bought the Arbutus Times which was their local paper. Dundalk doesn't like change so thats one reason I believe it will stick here forever ;)
DeleteOur blogs are very similar! Yes I hope the papers do survive for the one fact that I need something to eat my steamed crabs on! I did not know that the Dundalk Eagle was only 50 cents, that's a good buy right there. I wonder how much the New York Times is. I also agree that the Dundalk Eagle will survive because it is run by the people for the people about the people.
ReplyDeleteLOL...After I posted mine I was like ooooh NO she said steamed crabs too. Honestly the only time I read the Baltimore Sun is when I am in my bathroom, and thats because its on the floor for my dog haha
DeleteWe also have the same idea about our blogs. I think the Dundalk Eagle will be the paper to survive because people care the most about the local news and not news from halfway around the country.
ReplyDeleteI do care about what is going around our country but I prefer to see/hear what is in my local areas. I really haven't seen anyone post on the other papers yet.
